Offaly is bog, callows and the Shannon: the flat heart of the midlands, with the Slieve Bloom Mountains rising on its southern edge and the Grand Canal crossing it east to west. It is not sauna country by reputation, which makes the sauna listed here more interesting. The Sauna at Lough Boora sits at Blueball, beside the Lough Boora Discovery Park, where cutaway bog has become lakes, walking trails and sculpture.
It is a barrel sauna with a changing area and a cold plunge, and the park around it is worth the trip on its own. For more saunas, Offaly borders seven counties: Westmeath, Meath, Kildare, Laois, Tipperary, Galway and Roscommon, most of them within an hour of Tullamore. The Slieve Bloom Mountains are half an hour south of the park and the Shannon at Banagher and Shannonbridge half an hour west, so a day in Offaly can take in bog, mountain and river before the sauna. The Grand Canal towpath passes close by for a walk or a cycle first.
